Description

Netherlandish Proverbs turns a bustling village into a collection of human follies. Figures crowd the houses, doorways and open ground, absorbed in actions that become stranger the longer one looks. A man presses his head against a wall, while other people struggle, bargain or go about unlikely tasks. Pieter Bruegel the Elder gives these small incidents a shared setting, inviting the eye to wander from one puzzling encounter to the next.

Painted in 1559, the original is held by the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin. The villagers act out familiar sayings, translating figurative language into literal scenes. Their activities offer more than a series of visual jokes: together they turn the village into a reflection on deception, wasted effort and poor judgment. Bruegel’s humor leaves room for recognition, making the pleasure of discovering details inseparable from the question of what those details reveal about everyday behavior.
