Description
Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s A Coign of Vantage shows three women on a marble terrace high above the sea. One leans over the balustrade, while the others look outward from beside a monumental bronze animal. Pale stone, flower wreaths, and flowing garments frame the brilliant blue water far below.
The ancient Roman setting combines carefully rendered surfaces with a dramatic sense of height. The title suggests a favorable place from which to look, and the women’s poses direct attention toward the distant view. Cool marble and sunlit color make the terrace feel spacious, inviting, and almost suspended above the coast.
