Description
Edvard Munch’s Madonna presents a woman with closed eyes and a gently tilted head amid a flowing, dark background. Long hair frames the pale body, while a red halo-like shape introduces a concentrated accent above her face. The surrounding curves echo the figure’s pose, giving the image a sense of inward movement.
Munch reworked the Madonna motif in paintings and prints, connecting its familiar title with a distinctly modern treatment of desire and vulnerability. Here, the absence of a conventional setting keeps attention on the woman’s expression and physical presence. Color and contour make the figure feel both intimate and enigmatic.
