Description
Vincent van Gogh’s Trees and Undergrowth immerses the viewer in a densely wooded setting. Slender trunks and branching limbs rise through a carpet of green, while small touches of yellow and pale color suggest sunlight passing through the leaves. The close view leaves little room for sky, concentrating attention on the life beneath the trees.
Short strokes build the foliage into an active surface without losing the structure of the woodland. Dark verticals hold the composition together as lighter marks scatter across it. Van Gogh makes a modest patch of nature absorbing through the variety of greens and the interplay of shade, light, and growth.
