Description
Vincent van Gogh’s Willows at Sunset places a row of pollarded trees against an intensely colored evening sky. Their dark trunks and slender branches stand before a glowing yellow sun, while red-orange strokes fill the foreground. A narrow blue band beyond the trees introduces a cool contrast within the warm landscape.
Painted in March 1888, shortly after Van Gogh arrived in Arles, the work explores the expressive possibilities of strong color. Long and short brushstrokes give the ground and sky a restless energy. The trees anchor that movement, creating a vivid meeting of solid forms and changing light.
