Description
John Singer Sargent’s Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose shows two girls lighting paper lanterns among tall lilies and flowering borders. Their pale dresses catch the lanterns’ warm glow, while deep green foliage encloses the garden at dusk. Pink and white blossoms punctuate the shaded scene.
Painted in 1885–1886, the work brings cool evening light and small pools of illumination into delicate balance. The girls’ bent heads and raised hands make the activity feel absorbed and quiet. Flowers and lanterns create a gentle rhythm around them.
