Description
Vincent van Gogh’s Le Moulin de la Galette rises above a hillside of gardens, fences, and modest buildings. The windmill’s tilted sails break into a cloudy sky, while shrubs and patches of cultivated ground gather below. A second structure on the ridge helps give the setting a lived-in character rather than the stillness of an isolated monument.
Earthy greens and warm browns carry the eye upward through the rough ground toward the mill. The painter’s varied strokes suggest the irregular textures of plants, paths, and wooden fences. Broad clouds soften the upper half of the scene, allowing the sturdy silhouette of the windmill to stand clearly against the changing light.
