Description
Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s Air constructs a human profile from a dense gathering of birds. Beaks, feathers, wings, and small heads combine to make the face and crown, while a peacock occupies the lower portion. The dark background makes the colorful living forms stand out.
The image moves between portrait and collection of creatures. Individual birds remain distinct even where they supply a cheek, nose, or hair. Arcimboldo uses their differing sizes and textures to create a playful likeness from the varied inhabitants of the air.
