Description
John William Waterhouse’s The Lady of Shalott shows a woman in a white dress seated in a boat at the edge of a reedy river. A patterned tapestry hangs over the side, and candles stand near the carved prow. Her long red hair glows against the darker bank.
Painted in 1888 and inspired by Tennyson’s poem, the scene gives departure a solemn, expectant mood. The boat is poised between the enclosing reeds and open water, while the woman’s lifted face draws attention to her vulnerable, solitary presence.
