Description
Winslow Homer’s The Life Line shows a rescuer and a woman suspended above a stormy sea. A taut rope carries them through the breaking waves, while a red scarf blows across the man’s face. The pair form a dark, compact shape against white spray.
Painted in 1884, the work depicts a rescue using a breeches buoy. The equipment provides the only firm structure within the restless water. Homer concentrates the suspense in the suspended bodies, whose closeness contrasts with the immense force of the sea.
