Description
In Desemparats, Picasso brings a mother and child so close together that their heads and bodies seem to form a protective enclosure. The mother’s long hand covers the child at the front of the composition. Muted faces emerge from the blue surrounding tones, and the child’s calm presence contrasts with the weight carried by the adult figure. Their closeness makes the image tender without dissolving its somber atmosphere.
Made in Barcelona in 1903 with pastel and charcoal on paper, the work belongs to Picasso’s Blue Period. The Museu Picasso notes how light on the faces gives human warmth to the colder setting. The elongated hand is particularly expressive: its proportions serve the act of sheltering rather than anatomical precision. Picasso concentrates the scene into a relationship, allowing touch and shared space to convey its emotional force.
