Description
In La Belle Hollandaise, Picasso presents a seated woman with folded arms and a traditional white Dutch bonnet. Her broad figure fills much of the picture, set against a green background that keeps attention on the shape of her body and the pale headwear. The pose is relaxed, but the firmness of the contours gives her a substantial presence. Small shifts of color model the figure without distracting from its simple arrangement.
Picasso made the work during his visit to the Netherlands in 1905. Painted on card with water-based colors and chalk, it belongs to the period when his palette was moving away from the dominant blues of his earlier work. QAGOMA emphasizes its intimate character. The bonnet gives the portrait a particular setting, while the folded arms and direct physical presence make it more than a record of regional costume.
