Description
In Three Women, Picasso transforms a group of nude figures into a tightly joined arrangement of angular bodies. Warm ochre shapes stand against a darker blue-toned woodland setting. Raised and bent arms, tilted heads, and broad shoulders form a pattern that moves across the canvas rather than receding gently into depth. Each figure has a substantial presence, yet the group reads almost as one interlocking construction.
The 1908 oil painting belongs to the decisive early development of Cubism. Picasso makes the body’s structure visible through flat facets and abrupt changes of direction, allowing a familiar figure-group subject to become an experiment in space. The contrast between warm bodies and dark surroundings holds the composition together. Looking from one figure to the next reveals a balance between movement and stillness, with the repeated angles giving the ensemble its concentrated energy.
