Description

In Seated Nude Drying Her Foot, Picasso gives a small personal action a monumental scale. The woman leans toward a raised foot held in both hands, gathering her body into a compact shape. Pale drapery falls across the support beneath her, while the darker background concentrates attention on the pose. Her substantial limbs and the simple setting make the gesture feel both immediate and removed from ordinary time.

The 1921 pastel belongs to Picasso’s renewed interest in classical figure forms after the First World War. The Museum Berggruen relates the pose to the ancient Spinario, the seated boy drawing a thorn from his foot. Picasso adapts that established arrangement to a woman attending to her own body. Soft pastel modeling gives the figure fullness, but unexpected proportions keep the image from becoming a straightforward imitation of an ancient model.
