Description

In The Garroted Man, a restrained man sits at the garrote, his fixed position giving the execution subject a stark physical presence. The body cannot freely answer the apparatus around it, making the encounter a study of human vulnerability under an imposed mechanism. Goya concentrates on one person rather than surrounding the scene with the distance of a public spectacle.

The etched design was made in the 1770s, distinct from the later publication of the impression. Its force comes from the meeting of a living body and an instrument designed to end life, with the close scale making that relationship difficult to overlook. The image remains unsettling through its directness, asking the viewer to attend to the person subjected to punishment rather than accept the apparatus as a neutral sign of authority.
