Description

A giant man strides with a cloak amid a much smaller crowd in Well-Known Folly. The enormous difference in scale turns a recognizably human figure into an unsettling presence, as ordinary people occupy a world apparently governed by a body far larger than their own. Goya makes the encounter both strange and immediately legible through that contrast.

The design belongs to the Disparates, where familiar actions can acquire the uncertain force of dreams. Etching and burnished aquatint give the scene a tonal depth suited to its improbable scale. The image’s fascination lies in the relationship between the towering figure and those around him, allowing a simple act of walking to suggest power, vulnerability and the difficulty of sharing space on unequal terms.
