Description

Yellow, green and blue washes develop the scene over black chalk, leaving lighter ground to interrupt the clustered forms. The drawing is undated, and the separate reverse study is not part of the displayed view. Its vertical arrangement brings the viewer close to the vegetation rather than opening an extensive panorama.
A watercolor study can preserve the intervals between marks as part of its composition. Chalk establishes an underlying organization, while the wash can broaden, soften or redirect it.
