Description
In For You!, a man’s profile occupies the foreground at the left, with a woman’s bust behind at the right., with a woman’s bust behind at the right. The close placement gives the title’s sense of address an immediate human setting. The gray and dark forms let their relationship remain the principal interest, allowing a particular exchange to be suggested without its whole story being supplied.
Made in 1893, the lithograph is printed on imitation Japan paper and belongs to a project associated with Jean Goudezki’s writing. Toulouse-Lautrec’s visual invention gives the words another outward presence without simply becoming a complete retelling. The print’s interest lies in that meeting between an image and a title, where an open sense of address can make a modest encounter lively. One scene becomes a point of entry into a wider world of tales and human relationships.
