Description

In Débauché, a red-haired woman reclines or bends across a dark-clothed man within a setting of red bedding and a broad cream gown. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec gives Débauché a close, physically entangled composition. The contrast of hair, clothing and surrounding fabric makes the figures’ proximity central, allowing the scene to remain visually specific without assigning an elaborate story to their circumstances.

Printed in three colors on vellum in 1896, the lithograph lets broad areas of fabric and hair organize the intimate grouping. The cream garment opens a lighter shape against the darker body and bedding, making proximity visible through contrasting forms. Toulouse-Lautrec keeps the emphasis on the arrangement before the viewer, where the figures’ physical closeness matters more than an explanation of what came before.
