Description
A woman turns her back at the right of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s Elles cover, raising her hands toward her hair. The dark skirt gives her a substantial outline beside the paler bedding and a hat at the left. The represented gray-toned view concentrates on posture and nearby objects, making an intimate room readable through a limited arrangement of forms.
Dated 1896, this first-state impression was printed in brown on Japan paper. The image belongs to the portfolio’s introductory design, with Gustave Pellet credited as publisher rather than artist. Its quiet interior subject has a distinct pictorial identity even as it leads toward the series’ other scenes. Toulouse-Lautrec makes a private interval suitable for the cover’s public role, joining the intimacy of a figure’s routine with the organized form of a printed publication.
