Description
In the Elles cover, a woman in a blue skirt and light blouse turns her back toward the right. Her raised arms lead attention toward the head, while bedding and a hat occupy the other side of the interior arrangement. Color distinguishes the body from its surroundings, giving a private routine a clear and concentrated pictorial presence.
Dated 1896, this impression uses crayon, brush and spatter lithography printed in three colors on wove paper. It belongs to the second-state frontispiece edition, distinct from the earlier folded cover and later exhibition poster versions. Toulouse-Lautrec’s image keeps its own focus within those changing printed roles, making the introductory design more than a title surface alone. The work preserves one particular form of a recurring image, where pictorial subject and publication format remain closely connected.
