Description
May Belfort leans forward toward the left in Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s image of the performer taking a bow. Her light gown gives the body a broad, pale presence, while darker hands add sharper points of emphasis. The spare stage setting keeps the gesture readable, making a brief act of acknowledgment the whole subject of the design.
Dated 1895, the crayon and brush lithograph with scraper was printed in dark olive green on wove paper. Toulouse-Lautrec gives the singer a presence distinct from the boldly colored poster of her holding a cat, concentrating instead on movement and a particular stage moment. The inclined body connects performance with its audience without needing that audience to fill the image. The print makes a passing gesture lasting, preserving the relation between a performer and the act of response.
