Description
In Chanson Ancienne, a performer appears in profile facing the right, with one arm extending down to the left in a dark-gloved gesture. The differing directions give the body an active presence within the spare image. A subject identified through song becomes a visual encounter, allowing a particular pose to suggest expression beyond the fixed surface of the print.
Made in 1898, the lithograph is printed with a beige tint stone on laid paper. The colored ground gives its darker marks a distinct material setting, allowing a performed subject to acquire another outward character. Toulouse-Lautrec gives a passing song a visual companion that can be encountered more slowly. The work’s interest lies in that meeting between media, where the suggestion of voice remains associated with a fixed image without the two becoming interchangeable.
