Description
A crowd fills the three-panel scene at Mimeguri Shrine, with patterned robes, blossoms and signage giving the gathering a richly varied presence. Kitagawa Utamaro makes the display of shrine treasures a public occasion shared by many people. The individual figures remain part of a larger movement of attention and activity across the composition.
Published in 1799, the triptych was made as woodblock prints in ink and color on paper. Its extended format allows the shrine gathering to feel spacious without losing the close interest of particular visitors. Utamaro joins ceremonial purpose to the social experience of assembling in one place. The image’s appeal lies in that combination, where an occasion of worship or viewing also becomes a vivid encounter with clothing, company and the rhythms of a crowd.
