Description
The Four Accomplishments brings women and children together in a furnished room, with a garden visible behind. Their varied positions and activities give the interior several centers of attention rather than one isolated subject. Kitagawa Utamaro joins cultivated pursuits to a populated domestic setting, making accomplishment part of a shared human world.
Dating to around 1788–90, the work is catalogued as a triptych of woodblock prints in ink and color on paper. The multi-sheet composition should be understood as a design across related panels rather than automatically assigned to any individual sheet alone. Its interest lies in the relationship between people and accomplishment, allowing a theme of cultivated activity to become a lasting printed encounter.
