Description
Chūshingura, Act III shows a man leaning dynamically above a lower pair in Kitagawa Utamaro’s image, giving the scene a strong relationship between levels. A framed picture occupies the space high at the right. The bodies and the interior detail make the dramatic encounter tangible without requiring the image to recount the whole play.
Made around 1800, the woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. Its theatrical identification places the moment within a larger sequence, while the composition gives the immediate participants a close presence. Utamaro allows drama to emerge through the relation between the figures rather than a detached summary of events. The work’s interest lies in that concentration, where one represented scene retains the suggestion of actions extending before and after it.
