Description
A katydid and centipede appear among grassy leaves and stems on the left of this illustrated book spread, with calligraphy occupying the facing area. Their small forms become the focus rather than incidental details in a larger landscape. Kitagawa Utamaro brings two different garden inhabitants into a shared encounter, joining close observation to the page’s written presence.
Published in 1788, the book joined Utamaro’s designs with poems contributed by contemporary poets. This individual page is a woodblock print in ink and color on paper, rather than a depiction of the whole volume. Its interest lies in the close scale of attention, allowing the named creatures to carry a visual and literary encounter without turning them into a generalized emblem of nature.
