Description
A child lighting fireworks crouches over a small ground firework while adults and children watch beneath a willow. A red-clothed child near the center gives the gathering a distinct accent. Kitagawa Utamaro makes the act of lighting fireworks a shared encounter, allowing the close arrangement of people to carry the scene’s interest alongside the brief event that draws their attention.
The 1801 woodblock illustration uses ink and color on paper and belongs to an illustrated book concerned with seasonal life. Its individual scene gives a fleeting activity a continuing visual presence, allowing the encounter to be revisited beyond the instant represented. The work’s interest lies in that intimate scale, where a child’s participation can carry the image without requiring a dramatic event or extensive narrative to give it meaning.
