Description
In Girls Picking Green Leaves, Kitagawa Utamaro arranges women around the activity of gathering plants. A crouching figure and standing pair occupy the left foreground, while another works near water and vegetation farther back. The leaves held by the nearer figures connect the scene’s separate actions, letting a modest task organize the whole composition.
Published in 1801 in the illustrated book Flowers of the Four Seasons, the ink-and-color design forms part of a larger sequence of seasonal imagery. Its subject preserves a small act through which human life meets the natural world. Utamaro makes the gathering an occasion for looking, giving the activity a pictorial identity beyond its practical purpose. The represented page belongs to the book while remaining a distinct scene of its own.
