Description
Kitagawa Utamaro arranges the dance of beach maidens across a pale shoreline. Several women stand or bend within the broad scene, their changing positions giving the gathering its movement. A woven fence behind them and scattered trees establish a simple outdoor setting, leaving the figures and the spaces between them to carry much of the composition’s rhythm.
Dating to the early nineteenth century, the work is a triptych of ink-and-color woodblock prints. Its three-part format lets a group activity extend through one continuous setting rather than concentrate on a single portrait. The differences between upright and inclined bodies make the dance visible as a shared pattern. Utamaro gives the occasion breadth while keeping the surroundings restrained, inviting the eye to follow one figure after another across the shore.
