Description
In Abalone Divers, a standing woman in a pale garment and red wrap appears with a seated companion beside a basket. The narrow panel gives the figures a close presence, directing attention to their relationship and the practical object beside them. Coastal work becomes tangible through this small grouping rather than a distant panorama.
Made in 1788, the woodblock print uses ink and color on paper and formed the right sheet of a triptych. That larger context accompanies the source, while this displayed portion keeps its own concentration on the neighboring figures. Utamaro gives an occupation a human scale, allowing the people associated with it to become the center of attention. The scene joins work and companionship within a concise view of life beside the water.
