Description
A courtesan inclines her head in Kitagawa Utamaro’s close portrait, with elaborate coiffure ornaments extending the shape around her face. A checked green robe and a red round fan add contrasting forms near the foreground. The image brings identity into focus through the relationship between a person’s bearing and the richly differentiated details surrounding her.
The woodblock print was made with ink and color on paper. Utamaro concentrates on one figure rather than a wider social scene, giving the viewer an encounter with the outward presence of the courtesan. Pattern and ornament contribute to the portrait without replacing its human center. The inclined head gives the elaborate appearance a quieter quality, allowing the work to feel attentive to a particular moment rather than simply a display of costume.
