Description
Ornately dressed figures crowd a vertical lantern-float procession beneath branches and lantern-like forms. Their varied gestures and the dense arrangement make the scene a shared occasion rather than a set of separate portraits. Kitagawa Utamaro gives the gathering a layered visual presence, allowing movement and ornament to carry the encounter without assigning a more specific festival identity than the title supplies.
Dating to the early 1800s, the woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. Its Edo-period subject gives a temporary occasion a continuing visual presence. The work invites attention to a scene whose interest depends on gathering and presentation rather than an isolated portrait, without inventing a particular festival, route or ceremonial explanation beyond what the catalogue securely identifies.
