Description
In Mother and Child, a child leans across the shoulders of a mother seated at a mirror in Kitagawa Utamaro’s print. Her orange garment adds warmth beside the black mirror and a ceramic vessel. The child’s elevated position makes their closeness lively and particular, joining personal care to the immediate demands and pleasures of being together.
Made around 1793, the woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. Utamaro’s choice of subject brings domestic life into the space of sustained looking, allowing the relationship itself to carry the image’s human interest. The work offers an encounter with companionship at a small scale. Its appeal lies in the concentration on two people understood together, where an ordinary bond provides a subject as engaging as a more formal scene of display.
