Description

In The Seventh Hour of the Night, Kitagawa Utamaro places two figures within a restrained interior. A man in striped robes stands facing a seated woman near a low round tray or table. The pale wall and folding screen leave their positions clear, making the distance and direction between them more significant than a crowd of surrounding objects.

Made around 1800, the ink-and-color woodblock print gives its encounter a temporal identity through the title. Rather than illustrating the passage of an entire evening, Utamaro concentrates on one room and the people occupying it. Standing and seated bodies establish different levels, while the small round furnishing connects their shared space. The quiet setting makes a limited moment feel substantial, inviting attention to posture, company and the atmosphere of an indoor night scene.
