Description
In Ladies Surrounding a Cart, Utamaro II gathers many women around a decorated cart or palanquin in a broad, three-part scene. Colorful robes give variety to the crowd, while parasols and the bamboo or screened setting frame the group. The vehicle provides a shared center, connecting figures who remain distinct through their positions and clothing within the larger gathering.
The work is a triptych of ink-and-color woodblock prints. Its extended format lets the company unfold as one continuous design, inviting the eye to travel among costumes, canopies and the central conveyance. Utamaro II balances collective movement with individual appearance, making the group more than a repeated row of portraits. The print preserves a richly arranged social scene in which dress and setting participate together, giving each part a place within the whole.
