Description
Two figures walk through a snowy night beneath a yellow parasol in Kitagawa Utamaro’s print. Red and pale clothing contrasts with a dark robe, while falling white dots cross the gray field around them. The shared shelter brings the neighboring figures together within a setting whose weather and darkness remain an active presence.
Created around 1797, the woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. Utamaro joins personal presence to an atmosphere that extends beyond it, allowing the setting to contribute to the image’s human interest. The work’s appeal lies in this relationship between shared movement and the surrounding night. A familiar act of walking acquires another character in the snow, inviting attention to the experience of occupying a place as its conditions change.
