Description

A woman stands arranging flowers while a man sits nearby beside a large round window and shōji. Their shared interior gives preparations for tsukimi, a moon-viewing occasion, a particular setting. Kitagawa Utamaro makes the arrangement of flowers a human encounter, allowing the different positions of the pair and the room’s circular opening to connect practical activity with a seasonal association.

The 1802 woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. Its Edo-period subject preserves an activity whose purpose extends beyond the moment represented, allowing the act of preparing flowers to become a lasting scene in its own right. The work’s interest lies in that intimate scale, where a practical task and a named occasion meet within a human encounter.
