Description
Beneath a branch of reddish leaves, Ichimura Uzaemon and Arashi Sangorō appear in contrasting poses. One figure raises a hand near the head while the other leans into the encounter, creating a lively exchange across the two panels. Katsukawa Shunshō sets their patterned robes against a restrained background, allowing the branching foliage and the performers’ gestures to give the scene its movement.
Dating to about 1773, the color woodblock print turns a theatrical moment into a compact study of bodily expression. Broad areas of color establish the garments, while fine contours clarify faces, hands and folds. The autumnal branch offers a delicate counterpoint to the actors below it. Shunshō’s arrangement remains engaging through the balance between a natural motif and the purposeful gestures of people performing before an imagined audience.
