Description
Segawa Kikunojō III appears as a courtesan of the Ōmiya Brothel, dressed in striking dragon-patterned robes. Dark, elaborate robes dominate the figure’s appearance, while the Ōmiya curtain places the character within an identifiable theatrical setting. The contrast between the enveloping costume and the actor’s presence makes display an active part of the role.
Made around 1786, this nishiki-e woodblock print depicts a performer particularly acclaimed for female roles, including courtesans and young women. The play itself has not been securely identified, so the image’s interest rests in the supported relationship between actor, costume and setting. Katsukawa Shunshō brings the character’s splendid appearance into close contact with Kikunojō’s professional identity, allowing the theatrical transformation to remain visible without confusing the performer with the woman he represents.
