Description
Ichikawa Danjūrō V portrays Ōboshi Yuranosuke in a dark robe beside architectural screening and pine foliage. The surrounding elements give his presence a particular setting while the robe holds the figure together as a strong visual form. Katsukawa Shunshō’s portrait keeps the actor distinct from the character, inviting attention to the way a named performer inhabits a dramatic identity.
Katsukawa Shunshō’s color woodblock print is dated to the sixth month of 1783. Ink and color on paper preserve a theatrical subject in a format that allows slow, repeated looking. The portrait’s lasting interest comes from the relationship between the actor and the part, offering a record of portrayal that remains engaging even beyond the performance to which it belongs.
