Description
Segawa Kikunojō III takes the role of Soga no Gorō Tokimune in this print by Katsukawa Shunshō. The striding actor brings movement into the image through an energetic stance and the dark mass of his trousers. The body’s direction gives the role an immediate force, suggesting action that continues beyond the instant preserved in the print.
Dated to the second month of 1785, the work is a nishiki-e woodblock print in ink and color on paper. Its appeal lies in the specific relationship it records, where a familiar role acquires the presence of an individual interpreter. Shunshō’s image invites attention to performance as an act of embodiment: the character belongs to a story, but its visible life depends on the actor who gives it form.
