Description
Matsumoto Kōshirō IV stands as Ōboshi Yuranosuke, his quiet presentation set against a relatively simple background. The restraint of the setting gives the robes and the figure room to carry the encounter. Katsukawa Shunshō brings a named actor together with a recognizable dramatic role, allowing the performer’s presence to remain central without an elaborate surrounding scene.
Katsukawa Shunshō’s color woodblock print dates to around 1787. Made with ink and color on paper, it carries a performance into a form that can be examined beyond the stage. The work invites attention to how one character can acquire a particular human presence through an actor, leaving the role recognizable as something actively portrayed rather than simply named.
