Description
Nakamura Nakazō I appears as Chinzai Hachirō in the left-hand sheet of a diptych by Katsukawa Shunshō. One figure crouches prominently below another within an architectural setting. The difference in level makes the scene feel relational rather than solitary, giving the panel a dramatic rhythm that depends on the company around the named actor.
Dated to the twelfth month of 1780, the nishiki-e sheet was printed with ink and color on paper. Its place within a two-sheet work matters to the original composition, even as this panel concentrates attention on one performer. Shunshō gives the actor a lasting presence within that wider theatrical setting. The work invites a close encounter with the represented role while retaining the sense that its action belonged to a broader scene.
