Description
Ichikawa Bennosuke portrays a komusō in a yellow robe, standing with a long flute raised to play and a sword at his side. Green ground beneath the figure gives the upright arrangement a simple setting. Katsukawa Shunshō brings costume, instrument and performer together, allowing the role’s recognizable appearance to emerge through a specific theatrical presence.
Katsukawa Shunshō’s color woodblock print dates to around 1788, within the Edo period. Made with ink and color on paper, it gives the role a lasting presence outside the theater. Its interest lies in the relationship between appearance and identity, where the costume helps establish the character without replacing the performer whose portrayal brings that character into view.
