Description
Ichikawa Monnosuke II appears as an unarmed man in a composition whose original extent remains partly uncertain. The displayed two-panel arrangement places one actor in each section beneath shared maple branches. Echoing poses and robes connect the figures, making the repeated shapes part of the encounter and giving the composition a relationship across its separate panels.
Probably made in 1778, the woodblock work uses ink and color on paper. Its interest lies in the meeting of an individual performer and an extended theatrical arrangement, rather than in a claim to show a complete, independently conceived single sheet. Katsukawa Shunshō preserves the character’s presence within that setting. The image invites close attention to Monnosuke’s assumed role while retaining the sense that its original relationships may have continued beyond the surviving composition.
