Description

Ichikawa Yaozō II stands in the snow as a samurai, bringing a warrior identity into a setting shaped by winter. A broad umbrella shelters the actor before a fence, with snow visible along the ground and branches. The pale patterned robe remains distinct within the wintry setting, making the character’s standing presence feel both ceremonial and exposed to the surrounding weather.

Probably made in 1774, the nishiki-e print uses ink and color on paper. The snowy surroundings give the scene a particular condition while leaving its wider dramatic meaning open. Katsukawa Shunshō’s interest centers on the actor as samurai, preserving the difference between a stage guise and an actual social identity. The work’s appeal lies in that combination of recognition and environment, allowing the represented warrior to be encountered within a world that extends beyond his costume alone.
