Description
Nakamura Sukegorō II appears as a samurai carrying a suzu, a bell associated here with the represented figure’s action. The large-bodied figure stands with feet apart in an elaborate costume and towering gold-colored ornament against a dark blue ground. A rounded belly remains exposed, giving the theatrical presence an unusual mixture of imposing decoration and immediate bodily substance.
Dated to 1769 or 1770, the nishiki-e woodblock print was produced with ink and color on paper. Its appeal lies in the relationship between the actor, the role and the carried object. A small implement can shape a character’s appearance as meaningfully as a more imposing emblem of status. Katsukawa Shunshō preserves that particular combination, inviting attention to how the details of a stage guise give a performed figure an individual and memorable identity.
