Description
Gonen Otoko brings four full-length actors together across adjoining panels in this image by Katsukawa Shunshō. Broad dark-red robes, crests and patterned lower hems connect the performers, while their different stances preserve individual identities within the group. The format makes shared appearance and bodily variation equally important, allowing the eye to move from one figure to the next.
Dated 1768, the work was printed in ink and color on paper. Its interest lies in the relationship between individual performers and a shared presentation. The title establishes their connection without securely naming every represented role, allowing the group itself to remain the focus. Shunshō preserves a collective stage identity in a lasting image, making the print different in character from a solitary actor portrait while leaving the omitted fifth performer outside its scope.
