Description
Segawa Kikunojō III appears in a scene with two female-role figures standing close together beside a winding stream. Long pale patterned robes connect their upright forms, and one raises a fan across the face. Katsukawa Shunshō brings the named actor into a shared landscape encounter, where the companion figure and the flowing surroundings both contribute to the composition.
Katsukawa Shunshō’s color woodblock print dates to around 1777. Ink and color on paper preserve a stage-related subject as an image that can be revisited outside the rhythm of performance. Its appeal lies in the quiet specificity of actor, role and setting, allowing the landscape to participate in the encounter without requiring the character’s larger story to be reconstructed from the title.
